In Memoriam - Ruth Beebe, Activist and NC-VFP member -

The North Country lost one of its most ardent social activists on December 4th, 2007. Ruth Beebe slipped away from us at 3 a.m. but her memory will endure in the activism she inspired in so many of us.

Ruth was a dedicated, tireless worker for a peace, the environment and social justice. At 87, she would attend the weekly peace vigils in Potsdam, regardless of the weather, whenever her failing health permitted her to. She set an example for all of us who want to promote peace in our troubled world.

Directly below is a photo of the memorial peace vigil held in Potsdam on 12/8/07 in honor of Ruth. Other photos show Ruth at earlier peace vigils.

Ann Wright - Dissent in Democracy: How To Avoid the Next Avoidable War

Ann Wright, former United States diplomat and retired United States Army colonel will be speaking in Canton and Potsdam.

Ann Wright is one of three senior diplomats who resigned their State Department positions in protest of the invasion of Iraq in 2003 prior to the invasion. In her resignation letter to Colin Powell, then Secretary of State, she wrote “this is the only time in my many years of serving America that I have felt that I can not represent the policies of an administration of the United States”. Since her resignation, she has been an open critic of the administration’s war in Iraq and their execution of “the war on terror”.

Now available via the Internet: Before You Enlist! provides a rational voice to counter the seductive and often deceptive recruiting practices of the U.S. military. Length: 14:30. Produced by Telequest, Inc. with support from the American Friends Service Committee and Veterans For Peace. (see it here: BeforeYouEnlist.org)
